I am busy with intensive interview data coding using Nvivo version 2.0.161. I still feel like a beginner user and do not yet make full use of Nvivo's potential. Is it worth my while to download a trial version of Nvivo7 and use it for a month? Will that be disruptive time wise in terms of having to learn new procedures? Will I be able to go back to verion 2 without problems with my project data? I am trying to persuade my institution to consider investing in version 7 but I cant take time off from what I am doing to play with it.

Such decisions take a long time so I would have to revert to version 2 at the end of the trial. I tried the NVivo2 and N6 trials and found that I was able to learn them quite easily, which prompted me to buy a student license for NVivo7. I haven't had any trouble learning how to use it. In fact, I think it's easier to use (that is to say, more intuitive) than NVivo2, probably because I'm so used to the Windows format. If you can devote a good solid couple of hours to the tutorial, and you don't think your data will take longer than a month to code, than by all means, go for the free trial! However, if you think the data will take longer than a month to code, you might as well stick with what you know rather than risk losing all the time and effort you would put in on the demo. I hope this helps!
JJ, I'm sure you'll enjoy trying NVivo7, and find it easier to use than NVivo2, but warning! You won't be able to take back into NVivo 2 any work you do in the new version.

The projects from the old version convert to the new, but you can't take them back again to the old. This is because NVivo7 does things NVivo 2 doesn't, and it's an entirely new program with a different database structure. You'll love the new things and definitely benefit from the new file structure - but please don't keep working on that project in NVivo7 until you're sure the institution is going to make the shift to the new software! At any stage of your NVivo 2 project you can convert it seamlessly to NVivo 7 - I hope the waiting isn't too long.
